“Urk!” Carl coughed, and to his surprise, the Palacian queen did the same, a sudden gesture of discomfort as a wave of alien feeling rushed over them. For a wild moment, Carl saw a sea of visions against his eyes—the long drift of yellow-orange viral particles lifting in an alien dawn, then a tide of those giant viral jellyfish-like creatures across space, and the distant glimmer of stars ahead.

The xeno-hive mind is just as scared of death as we are, Carl realized, raising his head to see Queen Mia Oceanus looking straight at him with wide, dark eyes full of fear.

She feels it too, Carl knew. They could both sense how the xenovirus was trying its best to stay alive, to spread and eat up as much of the galaxy as it could, because it was so absolutely terrified of the fact of evolution. The fact of the infinite night of space.

That nothing lasts forever. Everything dies in the end and transforms, Carl knew, finally lifting his head up to the holos ahead of him.

“We can do this,” he murmured in the silence, aware of all of the eyes of the assembled people upon him.

“How far did the phage research go?” he asked out loud as his eyes still searched the holo visions of viral bodies and xeno takeover.

Queen Mia grimaced. “It was advanced. I believe that they isolated a small bacterium that feeds directly on the xenovirus. From the research that I saw, conducted by one Professor Fina Andjette, she had managed to not only discover the phage in the original xenoviral environment but also ascertain that there was some kind of chemical reaction that it created which was toxic to the xenovirus. She was about to further develop it as a possible antidote if we ever had to suspend the Fomorian Program, but . . .”

The queen looked down at the floor, her delicate jaw tightening in anger.

“What happened?” Commander Norjacks asked quickly.

“You must remember that I was not the queen then. I was but a toddler. My mother and her council were in charge.”

“But what happened! Does this phage exist or not? Where is Professor Andjette’s research!?” Commander Norjacks demanded.

“When I started to suspect Lord Vareilla of . . . not exactly working to our best interests, I realized that he kept much of his work secret from my mother and our ruling council. A lot of the research was hushed up, but I believe that Professor Andjette’s research, her findings, and even the living samples of the phage are still held on KX41, the world where the Fomorians are born.”

“Frontier System 18,” Colonel Forrest announced with a heavy sigh, nodding for one of her subordinates to bring up the map of the Frontier systems once again.

We have known for awhile where the Fomorian research hub was located, Carl knew as a small vector gradually circled into one precise area, highlighting it with the words Frontier System 18.
